Phenotyping Flow — Unifying Controller interface for hospital/lab observation hardware

About the Project

Phenotyping Flow is an interaction design project for lab and hospital observation hardware — a full application-flow board mapping how the system's devices, data, and operators connect, paired with the Unifying Controller: a dark-mode interface for launching and running observation sessions on the equipment itself.

The Problem

The underlying system connects several distinct pieces — observer devices, experiment configurations, connection types, and data capture — into one operator-facing tool. The challenge was making that complexity legible on a single control screen an operator would actually use mid-session, without burying the controls that matter most.

The Approach

Mapped the full system first: a 13-section application-flow board covering client devices, operator workstations, broadcast/streaming paths, and data storage, before any interface design began. From that map, designed the Unifying Controller as a linear flow — Launch Screen, Select Observer, Select Experience, Before Start, Running — keeping each screen to one clear decision, with connection status (VR, EEG, sound, EMG) always visible at the top.
