As of Q1 2026, AWS holds roughly 28-30% of global cloud infrastructure spending, Azure sits around 21-25%, and Google Cloud holds 13-14% — together, close to two-thirds of a market now worth over $500 billion annually and heading toward $1 trillion. That concentration is worth pausing on, because it has real, practical consequences for anyone building on top of it.
Cloud infrastructure has enormous fixed costs — building data centers, laying fiber, negotiating power contracts at scale — that create a natural moat for whoever got there first and kept reinvesting. AWS's decade-plus head start let it build a depth of services and ecosystem that's genuinely hard to replicate. Azure's growth has come largely from bundling cloud with the existing Microsoft enterprise relationship — companies already paying for Microsoft 365 find Azure the path of least resistance rather than a neutral choice made on technical merit alone. Google Cloud has carved out its fastest growth (63% year-over-year) from AI and data-heavy workloads where its technical reputation is strongest.
This isn't an argument against using major cloud providers — the reliability and service depth are real and hard to replicate independently. It's an argument for architecting deliberately: understanding which parts of your system are provider-agnostic versus provider-locked, keeping an honest account of switching costs as you adopt convenient managed services, and not assuming the pricing or terms you see today are permanent. Multi-cloud strategies exist specifically to hedge this risk, though they come with their own real complexity cost — worth knowing the trade-off exists even if you don't adopt it for a given project.
